KOTTBUSSER TOR, THE PLACE TO BE……..?

December 18th, 2007 posted by admin

On a freezing Friday night I decided to head down to Kottbussor Tor in Kreuzberg for a night of fun and frolics. With lots of new bars popping up directly opposite the U-Bahn station its an unusual place to spend a Friday night. Escaping from the swish central wine bars around Mitte, Kottbussor Tor offers a selection of underground, hot loud and busy…busy …busy bars to escape the winter blues.

First off - Paloma bar, hardly larger thanrent a car bulgariaNous avons inclus un glossaire bilingue du http://www.casinomoderne.com/casino-gratuit-parier.html en ligne, les règles, l’histoire, la stratégie et quelques anecdotes pour les passionnés. my bedroom, stuffted with dancing people and vinyl dj’s playing loud house and electro music, it’s the perfect place to dance away your Friday night, as long as you’re not the claustrophobic type - as this place has an atmosphere similar to an after-hours house party. With a trendy crowd and friendly bar staff…..it’s all in the name of good fun.

Though if you do find yourself a little too hot and bothered you can pop around to Paloma’s sister bar, Monarch. 1 Euro allows you entry into both bars, situated directly opposite the Kottbussor Tor U-Bahn and if you look up from the street you can see the steamy windows inviting you inside.

Monarch is about 4 times the size of Paloma, with a large bar, seating area, dancefloor and dj’s. Again extremely busy with trendy Berliners who are proud of discovering these little secret bars. Monaque supports a more underground rock and roll vibe with most folks bashing around on the dancefloor and knocking over drinks…so it’s not the best place to take your mum and dad for a drink….but it sure heightens those christmas spirits.

Auguststrasse, a happy alternative!

December 17th, 2007 posted by Carly

If you are not in the mood for the Christmas market scrums and wrestling your way to the front of the Glüwein queue, then a walk down Auguststrasse, part of Berlin’s old Jewish quarter, is the perfect way to spend an afternoon. It is filled with contemporary boutiques, galleries and cafes - all with free entry. I spent the afternoon treating my senses and getting inspired and this is what I discovered…

OONA
A beautiful crisp white space filled with magical looking treasures that draw you in from the streets. Part boutique and part gallery, OONA www.oona-galerie.de offers a wide range of designer jewellery from Mark Monzo, Mikko Minwaki, Susanna Kuscet, Christian Hoeli and Jiro Kamata.

Showing in OONA’s gallery space is a display called OFF THE WALL with work from Petra Zimmermann and a display by Wolfram Otto.

The Jewellery and contemporary pieces are displayed on small white blocks or hidden away in draws, with the exhibition showing mini-sculptures pinned randomly to the wall.

The whole contents and atmosphere of OONA is very original and it’s the place to go for a special piece of jewellery and to take a look at fresh design and modern ideas.

GALERIE BERLIN

A large contempory gallery, exhibiting works from different painters and sculptors. At the moment there is a Walter Libude exhibition, showing many abstract paintings in earthy colours depicting mystical charaters, all painted in thick oil. Well worth checking out.

KOLLEKTION IRENA EICHLER

The IRENA EICHLER Gallery is filled with paintings, sculptures and jewellery designs. The walls are covered from top to bottom with paintings giving the gallery a very busy and lively feel.

At the moment the permant exhibition is that of Irena Eichler and her life partner Jurgen Strant, who both grew up in East Germany and worked through the GDR period and were involved in the growing bohemian artistic circle that vanished slowly after the fall of the Berlin wall.

It is a captivating exhibition with large paintings of Tudor figures and art deco style paintings of women. A very enthusiastic gallery assistant was more than happy to fill me in on the history of the paintings, which made the exhibition all the more inviting.

KW

The KW gallery (Kunst-Werk or Art-Work) has been around since the early 1990’s and exhibits a large range of contemporary art works without owning its own collection, it is one of Berlin’s leading contemporary art galleries.

The exhibition at the moment is entitled History Will Repeat Itelf, showing from November – January 13th, with artists such as Guy Ben-Ner, Tom McCarthy, Robert Longo and Evil Knievil participating in the large group show. If you have the time and an interest in contemporary art the KW is the place to go for your fix.

SCHWARZWALDSTUBEN…

December 17th, 2007 posted by Carly

On a blustery and chilly Saterday afternoon I can’t think of a nicer place to be than snuggled up in Schwarzwaldstuben (Tucholskystrasse 48) with a hot milk and honey and a Schnitzel on the way. It has a fantastic food and drinks menu offering mostly traditional Southern German dishes and of course tasty fresh soups to warm you up. It is a bar/café serving food until 11pm, with opening hours 9am – 1am. It has a welcoming and cozy atmosphere, with an alpine feel and some fantastic modern paintings. The place is filled with a mixed crowd all enjoying the eclectic setting and the rare beers such as Rothaus pills.

This is a great place to eat at any time of the day or just to have some drinks with friends. The staff are all very friendly and the atmosphere and surroundings are very inspiring and comforting.

In the last years berlin got one more attraction: the festival of lights. for two weeks berlin is a glamouros and sparkling city. everywhere you could find some illuminated spots and places. each tourist feature is enlightened and glows. it’s a great show and if you’re in berlin you have to visit it by yourself. it’s until the 28th of october. but please, take me a favour…explore it by yourself and do not use the “touri-tours” with bus and cab, cause you won’t see anything.

have fun

i’m back :)

this week i got back from italy and i have to say: i missed berlin! i mean, i really enjoyed tuscany, but everything there was so chickimicki and has not that “dirt style” of berlin i really love, so it took a load off my mind when the bus arrived in berlin and i saw the first graffitis and the “i don’t care how i look”-attitude of the people here :)

so i’m looking forward to update the blog in the next days and provide you an insight into the berlin way of life

If you’re in berlin this weekend and addicted to music, you have to visit the REF-Festival. It will be in the Cassiopeia at Revalerstrasse/Simon-Dach-Strasse in 10245 Berlin.

The LineUp is filled with different acts, the music is from Reggae, Ragga, Dancehall, Soca over HipHop, Funk, Oldschool up to Electro, Trash, Punk Pop, Indie, Rock’n'Roll, Clash and Minimal. The program is very varied and I think it offers something for everyone. So have fun there.

Last weekend at 1st to 2nd september there was a small art and fashon openair on the Frankfurter Allee. It was not very big but a good platform for artists an fashion designer from Berlin. Each of them had a small stand to present the stuff they did. People drop in to watch the fashion-shows, to buy the newest “Berlin-Art” or drink a coffee and to look at the people. It was not what i’ve expected, but they promised to get bigger next year.

First of all I want to apoligise, for not posting such a long time but it was so busy in the agengy, you can not believe.

But this time I have a advice about a great concert of a famous Reggae-band from Berlin called SEEED. When we arrived there the first we saw was a great stage with two huge loudspeeker-banner on both sides. We attained there in the early evening and very soon it startet with the first pre-act: Miss Platnum, which has a great voice, cute outfits and very beautyful dancers. As 2nd pre-act there was T.O.K., which is a band from Jamaica. They did a great show and one girl after another was getting wet eyes of enviousness, because they get one chick on the stage and danced with her and each of them want to switch with her. Up to this point the sun wasn’t set. After the T.O.K. performance there was a break and the backfitting on the stage begun. Wenn it starts getting dark the huge red curtain was lifted up and the Seeed-show begun. They performed every song with the band constisting of 11 members including a great DJ. It was a fantastic show, there was something for everyone: they had acappellas, DJsets, dance-choreographies, great unplugged sets and lightshows and much more. So in the end, if you have the chance to visit a concert of Seeed, you HAVE TO GO THERE!! :)
